All degree-seeking students, faculty, and staff may have a New School ID card with their preferred name if they wish. A preferred name is a name you use to identify yourself other than your legal name. This initiative is designed to ensure that our transgender and gender-non-conforming students, faculty, and staff have an ID card that accurately reflects who they are and how they identify.
New and Continuing Students
You can enter a preferred name at any time. You will see a preferred name link in MyNewSchool when you click on the Services tab. This link will open up to a Banner self-service page, where you'll see a field in which you can enter your preferred first name. You can edit this field at any time. This page also provides the opportunity to select a personal pronoun if you wish. If there is anything you would like to see added to that list of options, let us know.
Please note that a preferred name will not be displayed on any legal documentation, including transcripts, bills or receipts of payment, tax documentation, financial aid paperwork, diplomas, verification letters, or I-20 documents.
If you are an alum who wishes to change their preferred name, please contact Alumni Relations at alumni@newschool.edu.
