Lang’s General Degree Requirements
n addition to the requirements outlined here, Lang has specific requirements, including a minimum number of credits in liberal arts courses as well as college residency requirements. All students should read Lang’s General Degree Requirements and consult with both their Student Success advisor and their Departmental Faculty Advisor each semester to ensure that they are on track to graduate.

Students should make sure that their Degree Works account reflects the information in this worksheet by forwarding any approved exemptions from the following requirements to their Student Success advisor.
Bachelor’s-Master’s Program
Undergraduates in the BA/MA program can earn up to 18 credits (depending on the master's program) in New School master's courses and apply those graduate credits to both their BA and their MA. Submission of the Bachelor’s-Master’s
application is required (members of the direct-entry cohort do not have to submit an application but do have to declare the Bachelor's-Master's combination they wish to pursue). Students should consult their Departmental Faculty Advisor and their
Student Success advisor if they are pursuing a BA/MA, including those offered in Culture and Media:
- BA Culture and Media—MA Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism
- BA Culture and Media—MA Liberal Studies
- BA Culture and Media—MA Media Studies
Requirements for the BA in Culture and Media
As of fall 2020, students declaring the major in Culture and Media must take 12 courses, outlined as follows. The minimum grade for Introductory courses is B. Receiving a grade lower than a B requires retaking the Introductory course if you want to continue
with the major. A grade of C in a non-Core LCST class cannot be counted toward the major (although it can still count for overall credits). A minimum GPA of 3.0 is expected for all students intending to declare in Culture and Media (slightly lower
GPAs can be accepted if a student receives an A in the Introductory course connected to their area, or both Introductory courses if the student is mixing and matching between areas).
Declare your major by following the process outlined in Declaring a Major. Students who
have declared the major in Culture and Media before fall 2020 but wish to follow the fall 2020 curriculum can consult their Student Success Advisor about submitting a Change of Catalog Year request.
Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Read the Culture and Media Student Handbook.
Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the Departmental Faculty Advisor and your Student Success advisor. Major Requirements
Introductory courses. Students must complete two (2) introductory courses prior to enrolling in any 3000- or 4000-level course.
- Two (2) introductory LCST courses (6–8 credits). Choose from:
- LCST 2120/ULEC 2026 Intro to Cultural Studies
- LCST 2450/ULEC 2028 Intro to Media Studies
- LCST 2122 Intro to Screen Studies
Other required courses and Senior Capstone:

Option A
Eight (8) courses, two (2) of which must be practice-based and six (6) of which must be at the 3000-level or above (24–32 credits):
- Two (2) Cultural Studies electives
- Two (2) Media Studies electives
- Two (2) Screen Studies electives
- Two (2) additional electives
Senior Capstone *(7–8 credits). Choose one of the following options in consultation with your departmental faculty advisor:
- Two (2) 4000-level courses in Culture and Media
- One (1) 4000-level course and one (1) graduate-level Culture and Media course
- LCST 4990 Senior Thesis project and one (1) 4000-level course
or LCST 4990 Senior Thesis project and one (1) graduate-level Culture and Media course
* For LCST 4990 Senior Thesis Project, a senior project or thesis must be approved by your chosen thesis supervisor and the departmental faculty advisor for Culture and Media. Please note that you will need to begin the process of finding a supervisor and developing a project in the semester prior to the one in which you wish to complete the thesis.
Option B
Eight (8) courses, two (2) of which must be practice-based (24-32 credits):
- Six (6) electives in one area of focus: Cultural Studies, Media Studies, or Screen Studies (18–24 credits)
- One (1) elective in a second area of focus (3–4 credits)
- One (1) elective in the third area of focus (3–4 credits)
Senior Capstone * (7–8 credits). Choose one of the following options in consultation with your Departmental Faculty Advisor:
- 2 4000-level courses in Culture and Media
- 1 4000-level course and 1 graduate-level Culture and Media course
- LCST 4990 Senior Thesis project and one (1) 4000-level course
or LCST 4990 Senior Thesis project and one (1) graduate-level Culture and Media course
