  • This page outlines requirements for the degree in The Arts (BA The Arts). Lang students can also major in Contemporary MusicContemporary Dance, and Theater. In addition to these majors, Lang students can propose a self-designed major (BA or BS Liberal Arts) including any Arts courses from Contemporary Music, Contemporary Dance, Theater, or Visual Studies. Students interested in this option should consult their Student Success advisor. Undergraduate students across The New School can select a minor from Lang's offerings, including Contemporary DanceContemporary MusicTheater, and Visual Studies. Arts majors can enroll in any minor of their choice, including an Arts minor in a discipline different from the one they are studying as their major. 

    The interdisciplinary Arts curriculum at Eugene Lang College encourages students to explore the arts within a liberal arts framework, balancing academic study and research with creative experimentation and practice. Students majoring in The Arts (BA, The Arts) choose a concentration from the three listed below. Visit the concentration's webpage for degree requirements.

    Requirements for the BA in The Arts

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the Departmental Faculty Advisor and your Student Success advisor. Learn more and track your progress in the Detailed Degree Requirements and Arts Requirements Worksheets below.

    Choose a concentration below (either Arts in Context or Visual Studies).

    Arts in Context concentration

    • Introductory courses:
      • Choose one (3-4 credits):
        • 1 3-4 credit Interarts (LINA) course
        • 2 2-credit LINA courses 
    • Other required courses:
      • 5 courses in one of the Arts disciplines (Contemporary Music, Contemporary Dance, Theater, or Visual Studies) (30-40 credits)
      • 5 courses in a liberal arts area of study (15-20 credits)

    • Senior capstone:
      • Choose one (3-4 credits):
        • LINA 4900 Interarts Senior Seminar Capstone
        • An approved independent or collaborative independent project

      Total credits (BA in The Arts, concentrating in Arts in Context): 36-48

    Visual Studies concentration:

    • Introductory courses:
      • LVIS 2001 Intro to Art History and Visual Studies (3-4 credits)
      • Choose one (3-4 credits):
        • LVIS 2010 Exhibitions as History
        • LVIS 2240 Art and Collecting Culture
    • Other required courses:
      • LVIS 3001 Methods of Art History and Visual Studies (3-4 credits)
      • LVIS 3250 Practicing Curating (3-4 credits)
      • 2 studio or practice-based visual studies courses (6-8 credits)
      • 2 visual studies or art history electives (6-8 credits)
      • 3 Interarts (LINA) courses (9-12 credits)

    • Senior Capstone:
      • Choose one by advisement (3-4 credits):  
        • LINA 4900 Interarts Senior Seminar Capstone
        • LINA 4990 an approved individual or collaborative independent project

    Total credits (BA in The Arts, concentrating in Visual Studies): 36-48
