COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Policies
Testing
Faculty and staff can obtain over-the-counter tests through their Aetna benefits. This coverage is part of all Aetna healthcare plan options for eligible plan participants. In addition, the university's prescription plan covers up to eight free at-home
rapid COVID-19 tests per member every 30 days. Learn more about obtaining at-home tests from Express Scripts. Below are additional resources
to help you find low- or no-cost testing:
- COVID-19: Express Testing: Schedule an appointment at one of the Health Department's free Express Testing locations, which usually return
test results within a few hours. Testing is available regardless of immigration status.
- NYC Health + Hospitals Testing Sites: Find locations where you can get free at-home tests. You can also visit the Health + Hospitals facility for testing, regardless
of immigration status or ability to pay.
How do I interpret COVID test results?
- A positive rapid antigen or PCR test is reliable and should not be repeated.
- A negative rapid antigen test should be repeated two times, 48 hours apart before relying upon the results.
- In the interim, if you have symptoms, you should proceed as though you have a COVID infection.
Masks
Masks are not generally required unless you are isolating, but they are recommended when you are in crowded indoor settings and if you are living with someone who currently has a COVID infection. Masks help mitigate increased risk for respiratory illnesses
including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Free masks are available at vending machines throughout campus.
Vaccination
COVID vaccines are strongly recommended but not required for all community members. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved and recommended the use of the new, updated 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccines for everyone six months of age and older. Due to current variants that are evading natural and vaccine-related immunity,
it is important for all New School community members to receive the updated vaccine, in accordance with the recommendations for your age and risk level.
Employees in New York state may continue to take up to four hours off from work, with pay, to get vaccinated against COVID-19 until December 31, 2023.
Employees Caring for Family Members
Employees who regularly care for a family member who is at higher risk for severe complications from COVID-19 may be eligible for time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Further, staff members may be covered by NYS Paid Family Leave. Please
contact benefitshelp@newschool.edu for all leave inquiries.
