Access to Campus

The following academic buildings are open to faculty and students:

• Sheila Johnson Design Center — 2 West 13th Street/66 Fifth Avenue
• Arnhold Hall — 55 West 13th Street
• 25 East 13th Street
• University Center — 63 Fifth Avenue

Hours of Operation: Weekdays only with a minimum of 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and a maximum of 8:00 a.m.-12:00 midnight. All academic building hours will be closed on weekends. Please also note the following: 

• Common Areas and Gathering Spaces will be closed until further notice.
• Administrative staff who are able to work remotely will do so until further notice. Those staff who have responsibilities that require a return to work on campus must adhere to all guidelines regarding testing, health monitoring, hand washing, and social distancing.
• In restrooms, alternate stalls will be used to limit capacity and support physical distancing.

Information about libraries, computer labs, and other campus spaces is provided below under “Making a Space Reservation.”

In order to access any of the four academic buildings that will be open in the fall, all students, faculty, and staff must:

• Obtain PCR COVID-19 testing. All individuals permitted to be on campus on a regular and ongoing basis will be required to undergo diagnostic testing when they return to campus. Details are provided in the sections below. 
• Complete the Daily Symptom Screening Questionnaire. To access spaces, all students and employees must complete a the questionnaire on the days they intend to be on campus before accessing facilities, as described in the COVID FAQ for Students and Faculty/Staff.
• Show your New School ID Card to Campus Safety personnel. If you don’t have one and are planning to visit the campus this fall then you must contact Campus Card Services at newcard@newschool.edu or 646.909.4472.

• All individuals permitted to be on campus on a regular and ongoing basis will be required to undergo diagnostic testing when they return to campus. Employees may continue to access campus buildings while they await test results but must adhere to the daily symptom screening protocols and all other safety protocols defined in the Spring 2021 Campus Plan.
• COVID-19 testing is not required for employees accessing campus intermittently over the course of the semester.
• To access spaces, all employees must complete a daily symptom self-screening questionnaire on the days they intend to be on campus before accessing facilities, as described in the Faculty/Staff COVID FAQ.

To gain clearance to enter academic buildings for the first time each semester, students must complete a PCR COVID-19 test within seven days prior to your desired campus space reservation date or in-person class (if applicable). We encourage all students to use the free binx self-collection nasal swab test kits if they are in the vicinity of The New School campus. For those who do not live near campus, check your state or country’s government website for information about free testing options near you. 

Students who complete their first test with an outside provider must submit their results. Those who use a binx self-collection nasal swab test kit do not need to submit their results, but must follow the instructions in the Testing FAQ to activate their test kit.

Once your test results are received by Student Health Services, you will receive written clearance within three business days that you are approved to reserve campus spaces or attend in-person class (if applicable). If your test results are not received within this timeframe, you will be unable to schedule a reservation or attend in-person class until you obtain an updated COVID-19 test.

For ongoing access to campus, students will be required to complete a binx self-collection nasal swab test kit every 14 days. Test kits are available for pick-up in the University Center and Loeb Hall. Failure to cooperate may result in loss of access to campus facilities.

Once you’ve received your negative COVID-19 test results from binx or submitted your results from an outside provider, follow the instructions below to reserve a campus space.

Libraries
Library services continue to be available online. Physical items can be picked up or dropped off by reservation only on the second floor of Arnhold Hall. Requests should be made via the library catalog. When materials are ready for pickup, patrons will be sent a link to make an appointment. Items may also be returned to the book drops located in the lobbies of Arnhold Hall and the University Center. No reservation is required to return items to the book drops.

General Use Equipment Center
The General Use Equipment Center, available to students and faculty of The New School, will have an in-person pickup and drop-off location on the ground floor of Arnhold Hall, Room 102. Please schedule equipment pick-up and drop-off by selecting “EQC - Arnhold Hall 1st Floor” at reservation.newschool.edu. (Note: Reservations are primarily for students and faculty — please contact itcentral@newschool.edu if you have a reservation need and cannot access the system.) Please visit the Equipment Center website for more information about these services.

University Center Quiet Study Rooms

Quiet study rooms are available in the University Center. Visit the reservation website to reserve one of these spaces.

University Center Event Cafe Self-Service Printing
Self-service printing is available at the University Center lower level Event Cafe area. Faculty, students, and staff can print wirelessly from a reserved seat using your personal laptop or device to B&W, Color, Pro Color and the draft Plotter machines. Please reserve your University Center Event Cafe Self-Service Printing seat at getspace.newschool.edu/reserve/print.

• There are five seats available for reservation periods totaling one hour at set times.
• You must reserve your seat 24 hours in advance.
• Multiple reservations are not allowed. 
• Reservations cannot be extended.

Computer Labs
In addition to remote computer labs, on-site access to general-use computer stations are available on the eighth floor of Arnhold Hall only. Each station can be reserved by one person per day. Printing will be limited to those with on-site reservations in Arnhold Hall. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A reservation is required to use any of the following resources:

• 4 Open Lab Windows PC stations
• 11 Open Lab Mac stations
• 8 Open Lab Audio stations without MIDI
• 9 Audio stations, with MIDI, in rooms i805 and i806
• Printing directly from a reserved station to B&W, Color, and the draft Plotter
• Drum Scanner, Large Format Scanner, or Stop Motion Capture from a reserved station.

Note: Audio/Video Suites are not available for reservation.

Please reserve your Arnhold Hall station by selecting “Arnhold Hall 8th Floor” at reservation.newschool.edu. (Note: Reservations are primarily for students and faculty — please contact itcentral@newschool.edu if you have a reservation need and cannot access the system.) 

Cafeteria
You may reserve space in the University Center cafeteria to eat. Appropriate PPE and social distancing is required. You may remove your mask while eating in your assigned area. To allow for proper clearing between break times, we kindly request that you be sure to limit your time to 30 minutes. Visit the cafeteria scheduling platform to reserve a seat.

Parsons Making Center
Most labs, shops, and studios are open, with adjusted availability. Prior authorizations and technician consultations may be required. Additionally, limited seats and open work space is available for individual project work (task time) in several Parsons buildings. Visit the Making Center website for more information, and to reserve a space or equipment.

Performing Arts Practice Spaces
Visit the CoPA Remote website to reserve a practice space.

SPE Media Studio
Visit the SPE Remote website to reserve the SPE Media Studio.

The daily self-screening questionnaire must be completed by all students and employees accessing campus. 

Students who plan to access campus at any point in the semester must complete the Daily Symptom Screening Questionnaire on the days you intend to visit the campus. This tool consists of a series of health related questions that must be answered in order to gain access to campus. In order to sign up for MHealth, students must:

• Visit MHealthlogin.com
• Click on “Employee Screening” to set up an account.
• Save the newly created login information, which is necessary each time the tool is used.

Residential students living on campus must complete the Daily Symptom Screening Questionnaire every day. If you live off campus, you will need to complete this screening only on the days you plan to access academic buildings. 

Students who pass the screening will receive a daily pass, which allows them to be on campus for the day. The pass must be presented to the Campus Safety officer upon entry to a New School building. Students will not be permitted to enter the building without a daily pass.

In the event students do not pass the screening, they will not be permitted to enter academic buildings and must schedule an appointment with Student Health Services or email covidesting@newschool.edu to be cleared for access.

Entering Buildings

• Entry will be limited to the main entrance but through separate doors. Doors will open hands-free where possible.
• Queuing at entries will follow required 6 foot distancing guidelines. Floor decals and queuing instructions will be installed at building entrances.
• Security guards will be physically separated from visitors, with plexiglass barriers at all security stations.

Getting to Your Destination

• Hallways will be designated for one way travel. Directional markings will be posted throughout all buildings.
• Stairways will be one way up or down. Signs will be posted.
• There will be designated queuing and waiting areas for elevators and stairs, with helpful floor decals and wayfinding signs.
• Elevator capacity will be limited by cab size.

Exiting Buildings

• Each building will have designated exit doors, separate from the entrances.
• Every building will maintain at least two means of egress.

Remember to bring your New School ID card with you to campus on the day of your reservation. If you do not have an ID card, please contact card@newschool.edu the week before your scheduled reservation. Complete the Daily Symptom Screening Questionnaire on the day of your reservation and show your pass to the Campus Safety officer when you arrive on campus.

Students who are only coming to campus to pick up or drop off equipment or library books are not required to obtain a COVID-19 test for that purpose but will be required to complete the Daily Symptom Screening Questionnaire on the day they pick up or return items.
